Winter Bloodies Feedback Form
For Winter Bloodies, there were 39 total voters. Well done, Realm!

Do you feel you had ample time to nominate/vote?
17 responses

15: yes
2: Request for extra time for nominations.

The Bloodies nomination window opened on January 6, and closed on January 15. This gave a little over a week to put in nominations. This will likely not change, as we want to ensure nominations are made with fresh thoughts for the six month period in question.

Were the forms easy to use?

All yeses, with one question about multiple forms. To that person: this question pertains to the nomination form and the voting form. Both are the same style via Google. :)

What awards did you like and/or not like? Why?
16 responses

-Not fond of Biggest Addict, unsure of meaning
-Liked Best Beard, but not so much Best Couple
-Not a fan of Realm Houdini, also not a fan of Realm Longbottom
-Request for more silly awards
-Not a fan of Catchy Profile Quote
-Liked Best Moment, Best 70's Pornstache, and Best New Character
-Did NOT like Best 70's Pornstache, Best Suit, and Best Beard as they don't fit a large population of the Realm, and are too biased.
-All others: found everything fine.

First and foremost - I am sorry for Realm Longbottom. During Summer Bloodies, few realized it was a Harry Potter reference (Neville!). For Winter Bloodies, I added in a note to check Urban Dictionary after a quick Google search brought up exactly what I knew it to be. Apparently, that is not the only meaning of Longbottom, and I apologize profusely for that. Seeing as this is not a diehard category, I am completely willing to retire it if the general public feels it a good idea.

Best Couple is rather a staple, and will be staying. Additionally, as a fun secondary category, we could add "Most Shipped Couple" (not really a couple, but definitely would dig it).

Realm Houdini is exactly as it was meant to be, but is also not a big deal. If the general public does not care for it, it can be retired.

Rather than giving up categories like Best 70s Pornstache, Suit, and Beard, I feel it might be more fun to add other categories that will target several different demographics in BL. Ex: Best Business (Neighborhood Forum), Scariest Psycho (for all those mentally disturbed characters), Best Dressed (to reach a wider spectrum). Obviously, open to more ideas. In fact, please give some more ideas on creative awards!

Honestly, I am not a fan of Catchiest Profile Quote either. If the general public says okay, we can retire it.

***Keep in mind, categories will not be retired without sufficient/resounding feedback unless they are found to be less than positive.

What awards would you like to see in the future?
16 responses

-Most Accurate Species Played
-Best Family Unit, Realms Longest Couple
-Realm's Best Calzone
-Most Avid RP'er
-More Elder awards
-Best Bio Creation
-Biggest Hooligan
-Biggest Fangirl/Fanboy
-Best Butt
-Best Smile
-Realm Animal Whisperper
-Realm Indiana Jones
-Realm That Guy
-Shyest Character
-Field to nomination Legendary Character every year
-Best Romance
-Biggest Crybaby
-Weirdest Name
-Best WTF Moment

OKAY. So... first and foremost, there will be changes. In Summer Bloodies, awards will be molded into positive lights. So, things like Biggest Crybaby and Weirdest Name will likely not be on the ticket. You won't even see things like Biggest Addict, but instead something like Most Dedicated Player. The reason for this is that we should be celebrating each other, and some of these awards seem to do less than that.

Most Accurate Species Played will be a difficult thing to accomplish, which is why we have Best Slayer, etc. and Best Overall Character. If the person who suggested this would like to expand/explain further, please do!

Best Family Unit is likely to not work, as the trophies need to go to a max of 2-3 characters. Realms Longest Couple sounds like something that would go to the same couple year in and year out, and would not promote diversity in the award.

Realms Best Calzone... I don't even know.

Most Avid RP'er I think is covered by Best Writer and Most Improved Writer. Both of these awards celebrate the people who go out in the forums and really get it done.

More Elder awards. While I would love to open that up, I want to remind the Realm that this is for the players. This is not for the elders. This is why we only have a single honor for the Elders, while the Bloodies is 99.9% made to celebrate you.

Best Bio Creation, Biggest Hooligan, Realm Animal Whisperer, Best WTF Moment, Best Smile, Realm Indiana Jones - I like it! Let's add Realm Wonderwoman to that list, too!

Biggest Fangirl/Fanboy, Realm That Guy - would someone please elaborate?

Best Butt... I doooon't know about that one. DVH - would you please?

Shyest Character... what parameters would be used to designate a character for being shy? Would this be in activity, or in actual character?

Best Romance is covered by Best Couple, I think. Did you have something else in mind?

Finally, the field to nominate a Legendary Character. These are actually nominated with a mail to the admin, and then my bosses make the decision. Typically, characters that have a history, been around for a while, or have made serious strides in the game tend to go up on that list.

Do you have any general feedback?

-Concerns over nominations made to hurt others
-Seemed rushed, want more campaigning time
-New characters being nominated for best of their race
-Category minimums, influx of characters at time of awards announcement
-Committee to choose nominations
-Entries should not be required
-Most Promising and Best New Character age requirements

Iím going to get to the most important first: nominations made to hurt others. Trust me when I say that any nomination seen that was meant to offend and/or hurt someone, was deleted. These are not tolerated, and will never be tolerated. In the future, nomination forms will be deleted in full if anything like this is seen again. Bloodies is meant to be fun, not harmful.

More campaign time is something I can definitely get on board with! Does a week sound appropriate? I think the nomination time of about a week, and the voting time of about a week, is ample time otherwise.

New characters.. Here is the dig. If a new character comes around, and they are active, they are likely to get noticed and nominated. As we are in the business of celebrating everyone, these nominations will not be thrown out. It is up to the voters to make their voices heard, as well as those nominating. HOWEVER.. In the future, characters made after the time period (ex: 12/31) will not be able to be nominated. Likewise, characters returning from a lengthy vacation during the awards will not be nominated. We want to make sure that we are nominating the people that have been active for the past six months in the game.

Committee to choose nominationsÖ I am 100% on board with this.

Entries are required to ensure we get a good number of people nominated for each field. However, if we wish to go that route, we can do away with required entries on the nomination form. The voting form, however, will continue to require answers.

Best New Character and Most Promising, in the future, will have age limits. Best New will be characters three months and younger. Most Promising will be characters four months to six months. Keep in mind, if the character has been Ďregeneratedí, their original creation date will be used.

Other changes, from your admin team

Best Writer/Most Improved Writer: Must have IC forums active within the past three months for nominations to be accepted.

All Categories: Characters nominated must be publicly active. This means IC forums, and comments. If a character is nominated, but only truly used the mail function, they will not be considered as there is nothing for the public to go by.

FinallyÖ

Each year, we hear that the Bloodies are a popularity contestÖ and I am here to tell you that it is.

If you go back through the old Bloodies awards, you will see a change in the winners from year to year. This is because the active characters change each year, outside of a few old curmudgeons we have running around here still on a day to day basis (itís okay, we donít judge you, grannies).

The Bloodies award those who are active, who go out and really get it done. The more active a character is, the more they get noticed. The more they get noticed, the more likely they are to get those nominations and awards. This is meant to highlight those who really play the game, and the best way to get awarded is to play it. Itís like the lottery: you canít win if you donít play.

That all said, the forum is open for discussion. Please remember to be respectful, and to use your words.

-Did NOT like Best 70's Pornstache, Best Suit, and Best Beard as they don't fit a large population of the Realm, and are too biased.

I would just like to add that these categories don't need to be taken literally. Get creative with it. Maybe Camille had a drunken escapade in Mexico and ended up with an enchanted 70's Pornstache. Maybe on a full moons Caitlyn grows a foot long beard. Maybe not only male characters wear suits. The Bloodies are supposed to be fun, and maybe try thinking outside the box for the funner categories. It can be any character in any situation, unless you are truly nominating someone to be a jerk.

I love seeing new names when the rewards come around. Because believe it or not there are diverse winnings. Sometimes, there are not and that's due to activity and the votes of yourself and your peers. A committee to choose noinations could potentially weed out numerous nominations of one person in a category in the future.

"Rather than giving up categories like Best 70s Pornstache, Suit, and Beard, I feel it might be more fun to add other categories"

There were 47 categories we voted on for the winter bloodies. And we *HAVE TO* vote in every one or our votes dont count. Honestly it was a struggle to come up with names for some of these categories as it is. I don't think *more* cateories is going to INCREASE the amount of voters but have the opposite effect. How is 50 plus categories not considered excessive when that many people aren't even voting and this was considered a HIGH number of responses?

these categories don't need to be taken literally.

If we're not taking the category seriously (people WITH moustaches in a moustache award) then what is the point of voiting in it why not just have "random spin a wheel winners" then. It amounts to the same thing.

-Committee to choose nominations

I am against this idea. How is a Committe supposed to reflect the entire voice fo the Realm? I personally don't want anyone voting FOR me. How would these committee members be chosen? straws? would the committee change with every award so that way EVERYONE would get a chance to let their voices be heard or would it be a concrete thing with the same people voting for the same people award after award? I think this sounds good in theory but I think it woudl just lead to more inclusiveness and less people feeling like theyre being a part of the process.

I am struggling to understand where the animosity is coming from in regards to winners and nominations.

1.) Everyone is encouraged to nominate people on the form. This is a great opportunity for you to start taking a better look at the citizens with which you share a Realm. With at least 30 unique players (NOT characters), I donít understand why anyone is having trouble coming up with nominations.

2.) The point of the awards is for peers to come together and reward players with profile trophies for the dedication they put into their characters. There are some phenomenally developed characters here. They have created entire lives and built relationships. This isnít a forum for participation stickers. How can you vote someone as ĎBest Baddieí or ĎMost Missed Characterí who has done nothing to earn it?

That said, I think people are making things more literal than they need to for the sake of being difficult. Please donít tell me you cant tell the difference between best porn stache and best slayer. Come on.

ANYWAY. Be active. Make an effort. Win the award. To be clear- I want everyone to have fun and let loose and enjoy the awards. Lets just stop whining all the time, yeah?

I believe there might be a slight disconnect. It could be me or it could be you. Perhaps in the nomination period of the Bloodies the committee could be there to help give you names on some of the categoies you couldn't think of things. Maybe you could ask your peers for assistance, create a discussion, and get names to fill out the categories that way on the nomination form? If the majority of the realm doesn't want more categories, then I would think they would come out as you have. Feedback is needed and a discussion with feedback is the best avenue to figure out the future of Bloodies.

You can vote literally if you want to. This discussion is about the nomination part of the bloodies, not the voting part. Vote however you want.

Again. I believe there is a disconnect. The committee wouldn't deal or do anything when it came the actual voting part of the Bloodies. If I'm understanding correctly, they could help with picking out names (to assist peers like yourself who struggled getting names for all the categories). They could create a timeline for the Moments that have happened to help with the Best and Saddest Moment if need be. I see the committee as being volunteers. The committee could also tell possibly whom has been nominated. So instead of getting (how I imagine it) 15/20 nomations for Solomon King as Most Eligibile Bachelor , and the other 5 put Zarek- they could possibly kick back and help someone come up with another name. Thus making the voting part easier because it would lead to more choices of names.

My two cents is precisely that; two cents:

1) All Categories: Characters nominated must be publicly active. This means IC forums, and comments.

I disagree with this simply because it narrows your selections even further in a game that doesn't have many players to begin with. There are people who may not be comfortable writing in the forums. I understand this is likely an effort for players to be more active, but it seems more exclusive than inclusive by making it a requirement. You stated this is a popularity contest. Let it remain that and allow players to choose who they like, regardless, otherwise it ends up being the same people in each nomination category, every time. Then why bother with awards at all?

Also, there are a categories that might be difficult to fill if this stands; saddest death and most missed character. The first can certainly still work if a character 'dies' and returns, but generally speaking, it seems these characters will no longer be active.

2) A committee to choose nominations.

If the committee is helping the players themselves to choose nominations, not selecting the nominations themselves, I believe this is helpful, since some will struggle to find a name for each category. The committee being the ones who actually chose nominations and take that away from the players, I am strongly against. Inclusive, not exclusive. If the committee performs the way Caitlyn has outlined, it would be very helpful. Also assuming the nominations aren't hamstrung by the 'publicly' active bit.

So, those are my thoughts and opinions.

PS - Jocelyn Fairchild for Best Angel in the Summer Bloodies! :-D

Oooookay! A quick interjection, and then back to you all. I'm super glad people are coming forward to talk - the goal is to make Bloodies even better!

If anyone around here has an actual 70s Pornstache on their character, I'd be speechless. This category is just for fun, and like so many others, does not need to be taken literally. I remember in it's first year, Dessa won!

The addition of categories is to give more opportunity to players to win, rather than take it away. If we widdle it down further, we will be left with zero fun and only Best of Race and the like.

This discussion is mainly for nominations, and any other feedback there might be on Bloodies. We may have a small community, but there is a large number of characters - which is what the Bloodies are about.

As stated above, I will be allowing nomination fields to be left blank. It is only voting that will be required in the future.

And finally, the Committee.

The first round of Bloodies, in the future, will be a week of campaign before the nomination forms are released. This will help to give people ideas when they are nominating. The committee, when explained, was not for helping others fill those blank spaces - but I do like that idea and feel that maybe we should discuss having a Bloodies Ambassador group which would be made of players, not elders, who would be willing to work with others and give ideas in the campaign thread for nominations.

The Committee would be made of Elders to look over nominations made and ensure each one fits the bill for that nomination. For example: someone nominates Caitlyn for Best Baddie, but let's be honest. She's the reigning champ for Most Helpful. That nomination would be removed, so that those who really are our Baddies, those characters we all love to hate, remain. This committee would also review the nominations for anything that would be hurtful to another player, or has malicious intent. The Committee will not have anything to do with the voting, as that is entirely up to the players.

As stated before, Bloodies is like the lottery. You can't win if you don't play. In order to be noticed, you must be active. If you aren't active, how is anyone going to know what you are about and what categories you fit into? It has been proven time and time again that the more presence you have, the more you are nominated.

I am struggling to understand where the animosity is coming from in regards to winners and nominations.

I'm sorry if you feel expressing an opinion is animosity. I struggled with the idea of even posting a response here because I was afraid of comments like that. I've been in the realm  for 6 years and have quietly played only 3 avi's. I'm happy for the winners and nominations. I even posted as much AFTER the winners were chosen. I meant it sincerely.  But clearly I'm not the only one who has some issues/concerns/ideas/feedback with the awards or there wouldnt have been the insightful feedback there was, or someone posting an empty post with the name "Boole Sheyth" after the awards went public. Seriously - someone created a new character JUST to post that in the awards forum as a social commentary! While they may not have felt confident enough to put themselves out here and express themselves I'd say it was kind of telling. And no - it wasn't me.

In all the time I've been here - this is the first time I've seen any kind of discussion about the Awards.  (thank you Cersei for being open and offering this). It is also the first time anyone has ever said straight out - this was a poplarity contest with catagories that shouldnt be taken seriously. Maybe it would be nice to include that *WITH* the awards? So people undertand what they're *really* voting on. This might be helpful for new writers to the Realm.  Maybe some of us wouldnt have become disenfanchised with the awards themselves knowing this? It might clear up some of the disconnect I obviously feel and perhaps some others as well - writers who may not have the "inside track" and knowledge or connections.

All Categories: Characters nominated must be publicly active. This means IC forums, and comments. If a character is nominated, but only truly used the mail function, they will not be considered as there is nothing for the public to go by.

Based on this criteria, many of the NEW names that appeared on the ballot this time wouldnt have been there. Cristina Scabbia, Zarek, myself, and a few others wouldnt have been included because we don't post publically or actively.  That seems (to me) to promote more inclusiveness. Not everyone is confident in their writing ability, or maybe they prefer  to have multiple 1-1 stories as it fits their comfort level. So hypothetically if 4 individuals I rp 1-1 with thought I was a good witch roleplayer and nominated me, I couldn't be on the ballot because I don't post publically? Zarek and Crisina have been here forever but they wouldnt' be considered because they're not current active posters even though they may have been at one time? I am not trying to promote more animosity - but clearly there is confusion and a lot of interpretations to the awards and how the people that DO vote view them.

Or am I taking this too seriously again? It *is* just a popularity contest after all, and now that it has been publically stated as such, I will leave you "popular people" to it.

Tanvir Buckley

The Bloodies originally came to the realm as the BLAs (Bloodletting Awards) back in the days of old as a fun way of acknowledging players who were putting time and effort into all aspects of the game. Because Bloodletting isnít just a click site. I mean, it can be if you want to do that, but thatís not itís purpose. Itís a role-play site. A place where people create characters and interact publicly with those characters to write interesting, entertaining pieces for people to read. The games introduction even states that Bloodletting is a place where Ďplayers role play in the various forums by creating stories for other players to read and join in on.í

And I think thatís where this confusion is coming from - this idea of a popularity contest. Because we can look at these winners and say ďWell yeah, obviously itís them, theyíre everywhere, blah blah blahĒ but thatís literally the point of the game. These people who won, they won because the voters know of them. And how do they know of them? Because theyíre active in the game. They write, they Ďcomment on wallsí, they joke around and have fun in a public arena.

Over and over again we see comments about how Bloodletting Ďisnít the same anymoreí. And itís true, Itís not as busy. And more and more we see role-plays disappear into direct mail, never to see the light of day. And because of this, awards such as the Bloodies are so much more important and, at the moment, the results of them look like they do. Theyíre important because if you want to win one, you have to make an effort publicly (as per the games original MO) in order to be voted for by a majority. And if you want to see more of a variety of names in the winners lists, you have to make an effort (as per the games original MO) in order for there to be more of a majority to vote for. Itís an incentive to get people out of their mail boxes and back into the forums.

People donít win awards for just taking part. This isnít kindergarten where everyone gets a participation award. If you want to win, you have to make an effort. You have to interact. You have to do the things that Bloodletting exists for - writing, community, entertainment.

Shannon, you mention that you and various others only write 1-on-1 in mail. And while I understand that some people feel shy about writing publicly and prefer to keep things in the mailbox, which is fine if thatís what youíre here for, I donít understand your logic as to how you think you and your friends would be voted for to win in a public award ceremony if we can't see what you're writing in order to vote for it. Thatís like me getting annoyed with the Oscars for not nominating my home movies, and then, if I had been nominated by some miraculous chance, annoyed that I didnít win the Oscar despite the fact I didnít let anyone see them.

I sometimes write in mail with others to try and Ďhash outí a story line or just to blow off some steam without being too serious, but if I want to be acknowledged for my writing, and push to win role-play of the month, I post publicly. Itís the only way Iíll achieve that public acknowledgement.

Iím not trying to start a fight here, or trying to add fuel to a pre-existing fire. Iím just trying to point out that to win a public vote, you have to be active publicly. And if you want to see different names in that winners list when the Bloodies come around again, you and your friends need to start posting publicly. If youíre having fun with your writing, why not share it? Weíre not bullies here. Weíre all writers who are working tirelessly on our skills to try and better ourselves. I know thatís why Iím here. I can see from your profile that you're a good writer, so let us see what you and your friends write so we can enjoy it as you do.

Although I've personally never particularly placed any stock in the awards, it's always been patently obvious that it's a popularlty contest. All awards are. So having to be a public persona to actually win seems to stand perfectly to reason for me. People do pay attention when people post things. The fact that Jay was nominated in three different categories; this is including Best Writer and Best Roleplay, when he as a character had only been about for a couple of weeks at the time says volumes in and of itself. I posted publicly, people read the stuff, that lead to recognition. That's pretty much how anything in life works.

People have never achieved something by not doing anything.

Thank you all for the responses and feedback. Clearly I have spent the last six years misunderstanding the realm and how things work here and why and am the only one feeling this way.

My apoogies if I have offended anyone with my thoughts and opinions expressed above as clearly I am the one who doesn't get it.

I am withdrawing from further comment.

Please enjoy your game.

The awards are a popularity contest and they always have been, I wouldn't expect that to change at any point. No one is going to vote for someone who isn't doing something to get noticed!

Honestly, most of this sounds good to me with the exception of a committee. In previous years when there were no nominations people simply voted through mail to the Dark Chronicle and there would be 10 people with one vote for a category or something crazy like that. That was when nominations were implemented along with having to be active within the last 90 days for the majority of awards. Yes, people nominate their friends and people they see active in the game but that all goes back to this is in fact a popularity contest.

Now if Cersei needs help with screening nominations I could see a committee to help with that, I know making sure everyone meets the requirements and has been active can take a lot of time. Not to choose nominations though, I can't see a reason to take that out of the players hands.

((Read over the above posts after commenting .. more or less this was already covered. Oh well!))

Also just wanted to add that I think Best Bio Creation should be paired with Best Bio as it previously was. Whoever created the Best Bio won Best Bio Creation.

So, I made a blog entry of things in general, using real examples, too.
As for the Awards, keep 'em simple. The rest are just bragging rights involving Looks, so does Best Butt, this is an s*x appeal contest now? Then, do a Wet Shirt and Oiled Body contest, not an Award.
As far I remember, there weren't a single complaint regarding previous Bloodies.
Only a case of somebody who ALMOST was nominated to some sorts of the Biggest Drama Queen.
And, Shannon, I hope you don't mind, I mentioned your friend in my blog entry, it's not badmouthing, I guarantee, it's more about her time in the Realm.

As for Boole, I'm surprised of such boldness and I can see from where said person come from. I think B had a character with an OOC Note giving a heads up, didnít like the way the (soon-to-be winnerís) character approached and this is it, of course things escalated. But, let me ask something, whatís the fun in just reading the Note and donít give mind to it?
