All throughout the Realm strange events were occurring, dark and dangerous things were stirring within the space they had all claimed as home. And yet, among all of those frightening happenings, there was an undercurrent of something more. Strange flyers were materializing at random intervals. On alley walls, grave stones, in pockets and upon coffee tables, tucked away in the most peculiar places where you would swear there was nothing before.
With them came the doors, black oak with a spindly red flower engraved in the grain, seeming to come from nowhere. They would simply appear in those same odd places. Tucked in an alcove of a back-alleyway, taking up space on a mausoleum, or within abandoned houses. And the flyers were the key.
On the selected date they would take flight, tugging and fluttering like moths to a flame, and lead the way – for those who were found to have one of those pieces of paper in their possession – to those doors. Others might stumble across them in those hidden places and place their hand upon the smooth wood, watch them swing open, and walk through.
That same red flower would bloom on the back of the hand of any who chose to do so. And there would be another pull, a shift in the air as they traveled through darkness, and a second door would open revealing a fog covered woodland. A short way ahead there would be a house, tall and strange, with a large black door inviting them in. |

The hand wrapped around the shadow's throat so quickly that it had no time to react, to do anything as the elongated claws to press into the pale suit of skin. The woman shook it like a ragdoll, sputtering and spitting words with an animalistic anger. This was something the creature could understand perhaps, it knew of anger. After all, was it not born of the rage they felt towards these pathetic creatures? Towards the ones who had done them harm? Poor weak beings lacking control.
The thing could have struggled, kicked, fought, summoned help. But it did none of these things, hanging limp within the woman's hand as she continued to speak. “What have you done to Yule?” She asked, seething. “Where is she?”
The being's skin tore slightly as those nails began to sink in, to claw and scratch like a rabid animal, and the creature threw its head back and laughed. A guttural sound, crawling deep from within the black bowels of its hatred. Even as it's lifeforce began to leak between the woman's fingers, the laughter continued, the creature did not fear this woman holding it.
At last the laughter died upon its lips and the creature spoke, choked the words out past the hand crushing its vocal cords. “It seems I am not the only beast here. Not the only monstrous thing -” It coughed and its lips became wet with black goo. “That roams these roads. Just today, I have met two. You and the Other.” It drew a ragged breath into its lungs, perhaps more out of habit than the need for air. Pretending to be living was a tiresome task. It would be better if it were true. And the creature knew that even if it did not survive, another would rise to take its place.
“I have already made one deal today. I have no wish to bargain with you. At least She offered me something in return.” When the woman did not get the answers she desired, the grip tightened, and she began spew a tirade of insults at the creature. This only brought more laughter from deep within the belly of the beast. “At least.” It hissed, voice lowering to a bare whisper. “I do not smell like filthy, wet, animal.” The shadows knew, not what exactly, but enough to take a stab in the dark at that scent of musk and beast. They knew because they had spent so much time watching these creatures as they – without thought or care to what they were doing – reigned over the shadows, beat them down, destroyed them one by one.
“Kill me if you like. It will change nothing. You are weak and unworthy. All of you. Such pathetic, sentimental vermin. If my time has come, do not worry. Yours is well on its way.” |

The thing that was not Yule felt the prickling of the hairs on the back of its neck, the signal that it was prey to the beast at its back. That signal came too late. If it had been Yule herself – setting side that at that point this woman would have no reason to hurt her – she would have reacted much quicker. Been more clever in the way she conducted herself. But that was not the case for this beast. This creature of shadow and little substance.
But it wasn't a complete fool. It knew that something was wrong, even if it was too late to get away on its own. This knowledge, and what the thing did next, would come to rest as a heavy price for Yule to pay. One that would take away something precious she had gained if her watcher was not as thorough as she anticipated him to be. Would catch her in the web of her own cunning.
Subtly, the shadow shifted its thoughts along those senses that connected the individual to the collective. Sent out a message for any of them who happened to catch it, word of the agreement it had made with the golden eyed woman. If it fell here, now, another would rise to take its place, would take up the mask and the promise, the pact. The creature didn't know if this would work, if another would be bound by the same rules and receive the same reward if it succeeded or if it only applied to this one being. But it didn't matter. Out of spite, the shadow would try to ensure that the price was paid.
The woman was talking again and the shadow, completing that sending, turned its head to look at her. It's mouth sliced wide across its face in a deranged smile as they neared the darker parts of the city. The alleyways that would lead in twists and turns to one of Legion's many hiding places. “Oh.” It answered, the voice strange in the darkness. “A little of this and a little of that. I'm a hard worker. I consider myself quite a good little lackey.” Yule would never say such a thing about herself but the shadow no longer cared. “Wouldn't you say you're the same? Ever obedient to your masters who hold your chains?” |

Ah, ah.
Instincts are funny things. Even something as one coerced shadow had instincts. The creatures hadn't laid in wait and formed the Legion without having some basic understanding of self-preservation. But even these creatures cold be swayed by individual greed if the bait was sweet enough. And Yule had promised a body, a body for nothing more than getting noticed by the right person.
It was a person wasn't it? That's what she had said right? But the shadow couldn't really remember anymore. It wasn't important. All that mattered was the body, a way to hold on permanently like the strange woman had. Rather than just temporarily wearing a face until one individual died and another of the hive took its place. Life was such tempting bait.
The shadow knew that something wasn't quite right, those pesky instincts getting in the way. And there was a choice to be made. Stay and see what information could be gathered for the many, or leave and find another way to attract that oh, so necessary attention. The creature was torn. Torn between desire and fear. The desire to gather more information for Legion, to do what it had been told, and the fear of this woman it had approached. The desire for a body all its own and the fear of the other woman with her twisting smile and gleaming eyes.
Something wasn't right. And yet, surely the shadow was clever enough to get both things it desired, right? It wouldn't die by the hands of this woman, but she could make its life very difficult. Still, this might be just what it needed to get that attention. There were other people it needed to see, other things it needed to do. But it could leave, if things go hairy that was one thing that the creature was good at, slipping away. And there was one other thing, thanks to its connection to the others who had already infiltrated the Covens and Sanctuaries of these pathetic little creatures, it actually did know the way. Even if Yule had not chosen to share that information. The problem was that it might not be safe to go there now, not while they were all on high alert.
It needed a diversion, something. And suddenly it knew what it could do. Yule had said not to harm any of them and the shadow had to uphold the letter of that law. But if it wasn't the one doing the harming maybe, just maybe, Yule would never know. “Of course!” The creature said, setting off in the direction the woman had indicated. “I'd lose my own head if it wasn't attached.” That cadence was back, a very Yule like statement. Now was the time to use the others to its advantage. They could take care of this one or distract her, that would be enough to keep its promise.
“I'm sure it's this way, isn't it?” But the woman had indicated it was, and so she couldn't argue. Her mistake, or so the shadow thought. |

The Shadow frowned behind the mask it had been given, eyebrows drawing down, taking the corners of its mouth with it before the creature remembered and stopped them from showing its displeasure. Instead it smiled, a little too wide, a little too bright, the expression almost creepy even compared to the normally eerie smile that Yule wore.
“A memo? I didn't know there was such a thing. Maybe it was forgotten.” How long had Yule been with them? The shadow wasn't sure. Since before the attack surely. “Oh, I've been around for a bit. Still getting used to things. And then this attack. Crazy stuff right?” The creature was becoming flustered, losing the lilt and cadence, the distinct way that Yule had spoken. It cleared its throat and took a moment to calm itself. Flustered wasn't good. Control. And rules. That's what the woman had said. That strange woman.
“Maybe I'm still out of the loop. Since I've not been here all that long.” Inconsistencies. Yule would have something to say about that but she wasn't here right now and it wasn't her fault if the creature was a fool. That wouldn't matter in the end anyway. “Honestly, it's all a bit unnerving isn't it? Are we supposed to stay in headquarters, do you think? It seems I'm still not used to finding my way there. I haven't spent much time there, you see. Could you help me find my way there?” |

This one Yule hadn't met yet, but she carried those same ties. The shadow knew, of course, because they had been watching for a long time. It would be easier with someone who did not know the face that it had stolen. Who would not recognize any inconsistencies. But it would be more difficult too, to earn some level of trust. To get anything useful out of this. Still, the shadow had agreed to the deal and so it needed to uphold it. The promise of a body that was flesh and blood was enough of a reason to try.
“Hello. I don't believe we've met.” The shadow tucked its hands into the pockets of the leather jacket and rocked back on its heels. “I just joined your Coven. Just before all hell broke loose.” It glanced around them, as if it expected the chaos to burst in and take root any minute. But then had to stop from curling the lips into a smile because the chaos was already here. “I'm not sure what we're supposed to do. Do you know if the leaders have said anything?”
Of course, they had. But the shadow didn't know that. Only Yule did and she hadn't felt inclined to share that information with what little she had given. |
